2026 Kia Sportage vs Toyota RAV4: Price, Space, AWD and Fuel Economy
October 27 2026,
Comparing the Kia Sportage vs Toyota RAV4 for 2026? Be careful with older comparisons: the 2026 RAV4 is an all-new generation and, in Canada, it’s now offered only as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid. The Sportage, on the other hand, is still available with gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. Here’s how to compare them on a level playing field.

Pricing and trims: two lineups that don’t compare quite the same way
Because the 2026 RAV4 is fully electrified, its least expensive trim is already an all-wheel-drive hybrid. To compare fairly, you need to match hybrid against hybrid and PHEV against PHEV.

The gas Sportage as an entry-level option
If you don’t need a hybrid powertrain, the Sportage LX FWD at $35,299 costs $5,205.50 less than the least expensive RAV4. It’s not a direct RAV4 equivalent, but gives buyers a lower-cost option that Toyota no longer offers.
Under the hood, a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine produces 187 hp and 178 lb-ft. It’s paired with a conventional 8-speed automatic transmission, with no high-voltage battery. With a 54 L fuel tank and combined fuel consumption of 8.3 L/100 km in FWD, you can travel about 650 km between fill-ups under normal conditions.
What you get with the entry-level gas Sportage:
Towing: up to 2,500 lb, 750 lb more than the RAV4 LE. That’s enough for a small tent trailer or a trailer carrying two snowmobiles.
Standard LX equipment: 12.3-inch infotainment screen, Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Lane Following Assist 2 (LFA 2) and over-the-air vehicle updates.
Protection: 8 airbags, including rear side airbags.
Warranty: 2 more years and 40,000 km more of comprehensive coverage.
Sportage PHEV vs RAV4 PHEV: electric range and everyday use
On paper, the RAV4 PHEV offers more electric range. But the real question is: is your daily commute 30 km, 55 km or 80 km? That number, more than the maximum range on paper, tells you whether the gap between these two PHEVs will actually make a difference for you.

The Sportage PHEV’s advantages, by the numbers:
A lower starting price: $2,359 less than the RAV4 PHEV SE.
More choice under the incentive cap: the federal program requires a final transaction value of $50,000 or less. The Sportage PHEV EX has an MSRP below that threshold, while no Toyota PHEV trim qualifies. (Final eligibility depends on the options and fees included in the transaction.)
What about the RAV4’s extra range?
It only matters if your daily commute is longer than 55 km. Take a commuter who drives 40 km a day and charges every night: both vehicles cover the whole week on electricity, without burning a drop of gas. In that case, the RAV4’s extra kilometres go unused day to day, while the price gap is paid the moment you buy.
Where the RAV4 PHEV keeps the edge
Let’s be clear. The RAV4 PHEV is more powerful (56 hp more) and tows 1,500 lb more on the SE and XSE trims. Toyota also covers its battery for longer. If your daily commute is longer than 55 km or you tow a trailer heavier than 2,000 lb, it deserves a close look.
The 2026 RAV4 offers 1,070 L behind the second row. The gas Sportage offers 1,036 to 1,121 L depending on the cargo floor position, which means up to 51 L more with the floor in its lower position, and up to 2,098 L with the seats folded.
Both seat 5 and have a 60/40 split rear bench. For comfort, the Sportage EX Premium adds ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and driver’s seat memory. On the RAV4, heated rear seats are reserved for the Limited.
When you compare similarly priced trims, the equipment gap becomes more noticeable. The gas Sportage EX offers a panoramic sunroof and a heated windshield, which comes in handy for defrosting on January mornings. On the RAV4, the panoramic sunroof requires the XLE Premium package. The Sportage EX Premium adds heated rear seats, which Toyota reserves for the RAV4 Limited.
AWD, winter driving and towing capacity
Every 2026 RAV4 is all-wheel drive, as are the Sportage Hybrid and PHEV. The gas Sportage is available with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. For towing, the RAV4 takes the lead with 3,500 lb, but only on higher trims; the LE is rated at 1,750 lb, versus 2,500 lb for the gas Sportage.
In practical terms, the RAV4 can tow a small boat on its trailer, while the Sportage is better suited to a utility trailer or a lightweight tent trailer.
Technology, safety and warranty
Sportage: dual 12.3-inch screens, head-up display and 360° Surround View Monitor on the X-Line Limited, Digital Key and over-the-air updates.
RAV4: standard Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, 10.5-inch screen (12.9-inch on the XSE and Limited), 5G connectivity and a panoramic view monitor on the XSE and Limited.
Warranty: Kia offers 5 years/100,000 km of comprehensive coverage, versus 3 years/60,000 km at Toyota.

What is the main difference between the 2026 Kia Sportage and the 2026 Toyota RAV4?
The choice of powertrain. The Sportage is available in gas, hybrid and PHEV versions. The Canadian 2026 RAV4 is offered only as a hybrid or PHEV.
Which is cheaper, the 2026 Sportage or RAV4?
The Sportage: $35,299 for the gas LX FWD, versus $40,504.50 for the RAV4 LE Hybrid. Among hybrids, the RAV4 LE ($40,504.50) starts lower than the Sportage EX Hybrid ($44,499), but with different standard equipment.
Which model is better for a family?
Both seat 5. The Sportage offers slightly more cargo space with the floor in its lower position and heated rear seats starting with the EX Premium. If you drive a lot every year, it’s worth running the numbers on fuel consumption: a few tenths of a litre per 100 km eventually add up to more than a small difference in purchase price.
Are the 2026 Sportage and RAV4 both available as PHEVs?
Yes. The Sportage PHEV offers 55 km of electric range, and the RAV4 PHEV 80 to 89 km depending on trim (Toyota estimate).
How do the Kia and Toyota warranties compare?
Kia offers 5 years/100,000 km of comprehensive coverage, versus 3 years/60,000 km at Toyota. However, Toyota covers the hybrid battery for longer (10 years/240,000 km).
Is the gas Sportage worth it compared with the RAV4 Hybrid?
Yes, depending on how you drive. It costs less with all-wheel drive and tows 750 lb more than the RAV4 LE. It also comes with a longer comprehensive warranty. On the other hand, the RAV4 Hybrid uses less fuel. If you cover a lot of kilometres each year, the hybrid’s fuel savings can eventually offset its higher purchase price. If you don’t drive much, the gas Sportage remains the most economical choice.
